SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Wild Women Walk - Frost Moon
DESCRIPTION:Notice! We have had a change in venue.  \nDue to fallen trees and possible damage to the boardwalk\, we will not be meeting at Maxine G. Morse Nature Conservancy. Instead\, we will be meeting at Morse Wildlife\, a 90 acre preserve of prairie\, wetland and upland forest. It is about five miles from Maxine G. Morse. \nEvent Overview: \nThis women-only event celebrates the season with a walk through a wintery landscape. Bundle up and get out there to discover that the forest and all its inhabitants are still there. The frost moon or long night moon\, is remarkable and historically marks a time of reflection and renewal. If we find an appropriate location\, we may gather around a fire. Bring warm drinks and some stories to share. \nAbout Licia Sahagun \nShe is a founding member of Firecraft NW and has decades of environmental and sustainable development education and a master’s in environmental and natural resources. We got to see her experience and love for the outdoors recently at Morse Wildlife Preserve as we examined footprints\, listened for birds and speculated on a pile of fresh woodchips and missing tree left by a beaver.

We’re excited to invite you to volunteer at Duwamish Hill Preserve\, a vibrant Tukwila park that provides critical wildlife habitat and walking trails in the heart of an industrial corridor. \nJoin us on Friday\, October 17\, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM\, as we restore essential habitat by removing Himalayan blackberry—an aggressive invasive species that threatens the health of our native trees\, shrubs\, and groundcover. \nNative plants don’t just look good—they do good. They support wildlife\, improve air and water quality\, and help create more resilient ecosystems in our urban environments. \nWe’ll kick things off with a walk through the preserve and have restoration professionals on hand to share their knowledge and answer your questions about native plants\, the Green Tukwila Partnership\, and Forterra’s long-term stewardship of this special place. \nThank you to Swire Coca-Cola for sponsoring this Forterra Friday. \nWhat we are doing: We’ll be clearing blackberry to protect the native trees and groundcover that have already been planted by volunteers like you. The Preserve now features a Cultural Garden\, an outdoor classroom\, an enhanced trail system\, and ongoing restoration areas—your efforts will help ensure this space thrives for generations to come. \nWhat to bring: Dress for the weather—layers are your friend! Please bring a reusable water bottle. Forterra will provide snacks\, drinks\, tools\, and gloves. Together\, we’ll bring the fun!  \nWhere to Park: Park in the lot at Duwamish Hill Preserve. View in Google Maps\n \nWhere to Meet: Signs will guide you from the parking area to our meeting spot. \nDate and Time: Friday\, October 17\, 1:00 to 3:00 PM\n\nRegister and learn more here.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Hidden Inhabitants
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEvent Overview: \nWalk beneath a forest canopy and along marshy shores to meet wetland creatures small and large. Gary Mozel is a lifelong naturalist and interpreter who has a knack for explaining what we see and engaging our imaginations on what we can’t see. At a walk here last year\, we learned how bats stay warm by roosting beneath the peeling bark of alder trees; also\, the “pop” we hear coming from a hummingbird is made by the rush of air over its feathers – like a reed of a clarinet. Join us and discover what will be revealed in this special landscape this year! \nAbout Gary Mozel   \nHe began a 50-year naturalist career that included work with Washington State Parks\, The National Park Service\, various Audubon Societies\, Smithsonian Associates and Woodland Park Zoo. He has led nature walks and tours in such far-flung places as the Olympic Mountains\, coastal Alaska\, eastern Oregon\, tropical Australia and southern Kenya.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nNature Journaling is for everyone.  Led by Nora Prindle\, this event offers a creative way to capture the essence of any experience in a way that is uniquely yours. Not only are we using words to capture the heart of things\, we are also using drawing – a kind of imagery shorthand that amplifies what we are witnessing. It’s a new way of experiencing nature with words\, sketches and doodles. No previous art skills are required. Nora will offer tips on drawing\, media and basic supplies. \nAbout Nora Prindle: \nNora is an artist and naturalist with a passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world. She has certificates in Natural Science Illustration from the University of Washington and Nature Journal Education from the Wild Wonder Foundation. As a co-caretaker of Morse Wildlife Preserve\, she finds inspiration in the native wildlife and believes that drawing nature and sharing it with others can foster a deeper appreciation and commitment to protecting the natural world.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Forest Meditation with Clear Mountain Monastery
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nDesigned for everyone to experience\, this event will start with a calm and quiet half-mile walk leading us to an open area where the Ajahn’s will guide us in sitting meditation and a talk. We’ll complete the second half with more walking\, taking in nature the whole way.   \nWhy Forest Meditation? The Buddha was born under a tree\, attained Enlightenment under a tree\, lived and practiced under trees\, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”   \nOne of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area\, Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve is a wonderland of ponds\, marshes and forests stewarded and protected by Forterra Trust. \nLet’s see what we can learn from sitting together. \n  \nAbout Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho of Clear Mountain Monastery.   \nThe monastics Kovilo and Nisabho embody an early form of Buddhism that represents a return to a simpler way of life centered around nature. Rooted in forest meditation\, they guide participants in experiencing nature and wooded trails in a deeper way by walking\, sitting\, and guided meditation. This was our most popular event and we are very happy for their return.

SUMMARY:Forterra Fridays: June 2025
DESCRIPTION:Forterra Fridays: June 2025 \nFriday\, Jun 20\, 2025\, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm \nWe’re excited to invite you to volunteer with us at Schibig Lakeview Nature Preserve. The preserve is parkland open space and is South Puget Sound Prairie\, one of the rarest ecosystems in the country. This prairie is adjacent to 60-acres of wetland that connects it to the 61\,000 acres of forest\, woodland\, and savanna at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). Over 72 bird species have been observed on this property including nests from species like red-tailed hawks.\n \nJoin us on Friday\, June 20\, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM\, to restore essential prairie habitat. You will gain valuable insights into ecological restoration and our innovative approach to land conservation. SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Name that Flower! Plant and Flower ID
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEvent Overview: \nAmble through the 117 acres (trail is 1 mile) of wetland and upland forest where flowers are blooming everywhere. Plants will be bursting with spring growth and we’ll look for clues on how to identify them. Ryan Johnson (Firecraft NW) is a naturalist whose specialty is plant ID and wildlife tracking. We’ll explore the differences between wetland plants and upland forest species and learn which animals find the new growth tasty to nibble on. Bonus: Ryan also knows his birds\, which we will keep an eye and ear out for. With Mother’s Day a week away\, consider making this a family outing. \nAbout Ryan Johnson \nHe is a founding member of Firecraft NW. Schooled in biology and phycology\, Ryan has deep experience in outdoor adventuring. As a Pacific NW naturalist\, he has a passion for birding\, shelter building\, tracking and teaching. He notices everything and will surprise you with the signs left by wildlife.
