SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Hidden Inhabitants
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEvent Overview: \nWalk beneath a forest canopy and along marshy shores to meet wetland creatures small and large. Gary Mozel is a lifelong naturalist and interpreter who has a knack for explaining what we see and engaging our imaginations on what we can’t see. At a walk here last year\, we learned how bats stay warm by roosting beneath the peeling bark of alder trees; also\, the “pop” we hear coming from a hummingbird is made by the rush of air over its feathers – like a reed of a clarinet. Join us and discover what will be revealed in this special landscape this year! \nAbout Gary Mozel   \nHe began a 50-year naturalist career that included work with Washington State Parks\, The National Park Service\, various Audubon Societies\, Smithsonian Associates and Woodland Park Zoo. He has led nature walks and tours in such far-flung places as the Olympic Mountains\, coastal Alaska\, eastern Oregon\, tropical Australia and southern Kenya.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nNature Journaling is for everyone.  Led by Nora Prindle\, this event offers a creative way to capture the essence of any experience in a way that is uniquely yours. Not only are we using words to capture the heart of things\, we are also using drawing – a kind of imagery shorthand that amplifies what we are witnessing. It’s a new way of experiencing nature with words\, sketches and doodles. No previous art skills are required. Nora will offer tips on drawing\, media and basic supplies. \nAbout Nora Prindle: \nNora is an artist and naturalist with a passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world. She has certificates in Natural Science Illustration from the University of Washington and Nature Journal Education from the Wild Wonder Foundation. As a co-caretaker of Morse Wildlife Preserve\, she finds inspiration in the native wildlife and believes that drawing nature and sharing it with others can foster a deeper appreciation and commitment to protecting the natural world.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Forest Meditation with Clear Mountain Monastery
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nDesigned for everyone to experience\, this event will start with a calm and quiet half-mile walk leading us to an open area where the Ajahn’s will guide us in sitting meditation and a talk. We’ll complete the second half with more walking\, taking in nature the whole way.   \nWhy Forest Meditation? The Buddha was born under a tree\, attained Enlightenment under a tree\, lived and practiced under trees\, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”   \nOne of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area\, Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve is a wonderland of ponds\, marshes and forests stewarded and protected by Forterra Trust. \nLet’s see what we can learn from sitting together. \n  \nAbout Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho of Clear Mountain Monastery.   \nThe monastics Kovilo and Nisabho embody an early form of Buddhism that represents a return to a simpler way of life centered around nature. Rooted in forest meditation\, they guide participants in experiencing nature and wooded trails in a deeper way by walking\, sitting\, and guided meditation. This was our most popular event and we are very happy for their return.

SUMMARY:Forterra Fridays: June 2025
DESCRIPTION:Forterra Fridays: June 2025 \nFriday\, Jun 20\, 2025\, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm \nWe’re excited to invite you to volunteer with us at Schibig Lakeview Nature Preserve. The preserve is parkland open space and is South Puget Sound Prairie\, one of the rarest ecosystems in the country. This prairie is adjacent to 60-acres of wetland that connects it to the 61\,000 acres of forest\, woodland\, and savanna at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). Over 72 bird species have been observed on this property including nests from species like red-tailed hawks.\n \nJoin us on Friday\, June 20\, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM\, to restore essential prairie habitat. You will gain valuable insights into ecological restoration and our innovative approach to land conservation. We’ll start with a walk of the site and have restoration professionals on hand to answer questions about plants\, restoration\, and Forterra.\n \nWhat we are doing: We’ll be removing the blackberry and other invasive species along Clover Creek to help establish a healthy riparian buffer. If there is time and interest\, we also will remove invasive species around the recently planted Garry Oak trees. It’s a great opportunity to look for birds\, give back to the community\, and learn about this special space. \nWhat to bring: Please dress for the weather (in layers to stay cool/warm and dry). Snacks\, drinks\, tools\, and gloves will be provided. \nWhere to park: Rainier View Christian Church has graciously allowed us to use their parking lot (12305 Spanaway Loop Rd S\, Tacoma\, WA 98444). \nWhere to meet: We will be meeting on the opposite side of Spanaway Loop Rd S. Follow the Forterra Event Signs. \nDate and time: Friday\, June 20\, 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM \nRegister and learn more here. \n

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Salmon & Mature Forest – Watershed Stories
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEvent Overview: \nThe hidden stories of this park are revealed as Gary Mozel\, naturalist and interpreter\, takes us along a winding trail past towering firs and cedars. We’ll follow Lund’s Creek down to a small estuary with an amazing history — a tale of pristine biodiversity\, then sad decline … and now ambitious rehabilitation. This hidden gem\, also known as Meadowdale Beach Park\, is a fine example of an intact watershed and the value of restoration. Join us and be inspired by this success story! \nAbout Gary Mozel   \nBegan a 50-year naturalist career that included work with Washington State Parks\, The National Park Service\, various Audubon Societies\, Smithsonian Associates and Woodland Park Zoo. He has led nature walks and tours in such far-flung places as the Olympic Mountains\, coastal Alaska\, eastern Oregon\, tropical Australia and southern Kenya.

Over 72 bird species have been observed on this property including nests from species like red-tailed hawks. \n \nJoin us on Friday\, May 16\, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM\, to restore essential prairie habitat. It’s a great opportunity to look for birds\, give back to the community and learn about this special space. Licia Sahagun and Ryan Johnson of Firecraft NW are naturalists and educators who will unveil hidden inhabitants of this beautiful landscape. We’ll listen and attempt to identify the many birds that have recently migrated from California to Mexico. Along the way we’ll look for animal tracks and tune-in to the wild dramas that play out here every day. It’s time to get excited about the new season of Forterra Nature Discovery™. \nJoin us! \nAbout Ryan Johnson: He is the founder of Firecraft Northwest. Ryan’s education is in biology and psychology\, and he has extensive experience as an outdoor educator. With a focus on naturalist skills\, his passions include birding\, ethnobotany\, shelter building\, wildlife tracking\, and teaching. Ryan’s goal is to help his students notice more about the natural world around them\, and hopes to surprise you by pointing out some of the incredible signs left by wildlife. \nAbout Licia Sahagun: She is a co-owner of Firecraft Northwest and has a decade of experience in environment and sustainability work and holds a master’s in Environmental\, Natural Resources\, and Energy Law. We got to see her experience and love for the outdoors recently at Morse Wildlife Preserve as we examined footprints\, listened for birds and speculated on a pile of fresh woodchips and missing tree left by a beaver.

SUMMARY:Partner Event: Visit Morse Wildlife Preserve for Second Sundays April-October
DESCRIPTION:Come visit the Morse Wildlife Preserve\, nearly 100 acres spanning multiple habitats open to the public every second Sunday of the month from April through October. \nCome enjoy the Oregon white oak savanna\, prairie flowers\, and a mixed lowland forest full of cedar and hemlock. Morse Wildlife Preserve is also a birding hotspot\, with a resident barn owl\, western bluebirds\, and a myriad of other species. \nYou can check them all out at the Morse Hotspot on eBird. \nThe preserve started with a donation of approximately 50 acres from Lloyd and Maxine Morse. A private party purchased another 40-plus acres and then donated that land to the Tahoma Land Conservancy (now Forterra). Forterra owns the property\, while the Tahoma Bird Alliance provides educational programming and support. The Morse Force\, a group of dedicated local volunteers\, provides essential management and maintenance support. \nMore details are at Morse Visitor Information.
