SUMMARY:Visit Morse Wildlife Preserve - Open Second Sundays
DESCRIPTION:  \nCome visit the Morse Wildlife Preserve\, nearly 100 acres spanning multiple habitats open to the public every second Sunday of the month from April through October. \nCome enjoy the Oregon white oak savanna\, prairie flowers\, and a mixed lowland forest full of cedar and hemlock. Morse Wildlife Preserve is also a birding hotspot\, with a resident barn owl\, western bluebirds\, and a myriad of other species. \nYou can check them all out at the Morse Hotspot on eBird. \nThe preserve started with a donation of approximately 50 acres from Lloyd and Maxine Morse. A private party purchased another 40-plus acres and then donated that land to the Tahoma Land Conservancy (now Forterra). Forterra owns the property\, while the Tahoma Bird Alliance provides educational programming and support. The Morse Force\, a group of dedicated local volunteers\, provides essential management and maintenance support. \nMorse Wildlife Preserve is open in 2025 to the public from 9am-3pm on Second Sundays\, April through October:  April 13 \, May 11\, June 8\, July 13\, August 10\, September 14\, and October 12. \nMore details are at Morse Visitor Information.

The park offers a diverse landscape\, including forested areas\, walking trails\, and open fields. It’s also home to the Northwest Stream Center that provides educational programing that focuses on local waterways and stream restoration. \nJoin us on Friday\, May 9\, from 2 to 4 PM\, to help restore essential forest habitat. We’ll begin with a short educational walk through the park with restoration professionals on hand to answer questions about native plants\, invasive species\, and local conservation efforts. Dick’s Drive-In staff are adding their helping hands at this event\, and wait for it… \nThere will be free Dick’s burgers to reward everyone’s good work! \nWhat we are doing:\nRemoving invasive species such as Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other noxious weeds to support a healthy forest. \nWhat to bring:\nPlease wear long sleeves\, long pants\, and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a full water bottle. We’ll explore the differences between wetland plants and upland forest species and learn which animals find the new growth tasty to nibble on. Bonus: Ryan also knows his birds\, which we will keep an eye and ear out for. With Mother’s Day a week away\, consider making this a family outing. \nAbout Ryan Johnson \nHe is a founding member of Firecraft NW. Established native plants benefit local wildlife\, improve water quality\, and enhance air quality.  \n \nYou will also gain valuable insights into ecological restoration and our innovative approach to land conservation. We’ll start with a walk of the site and Earth Day themed trivia and have restoration professionals on hand to answer questions about plants\, restoration\, the Green Tukwila Partnership and Forterra. \n \nWhat we are doing: The Preserve now includes an outdoor classroom area\, the Cultural Garden\, an enhanced trail system and continued restoration opportunities for volunteers. Learn to connect plant scents with bird habitats. \nAbout Naturalist Eileen Lambert \nShe founded and runs Des Moines Birders\, where she has co-hosted Birding by Ear and Spring and Fall Migration outings. She has led multiple bird outings in the South Sound area and beyond. Her event will be the peak season for returning migratory birds and camas bloom at Morse Wildlife Preserve.

Join us on Friday\, Feb. 21\, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM\, to restore essential wildlife habitat by removing Himalayan blackberry that threatens our local native trees\, shrubs and groundcover. Established native plants benefit local wildlife\, improve water quality\, and enhance air quality.  \n \nYou will also gain valuable insights into ecological restoration and our innovative approach to land conservation. We’ll start with a walk of the site and have restoration professionals on hand to answer questions about plants\, restoration\, the Green Tukwila Partnership and Forterra. \n \nThank you to First Interstate Bank for sponsoring this event. \n \nWhat we are doing: The Preserve now includes an outdoor classroom area\, the Cultural Garden\, an enhanced trail system and continued restoration opportunities for volunteers. SUMMARY:Partner Event: Visit Morse Wildlife Preserve for Second Sundays April-October
DESCRIPTION:Come visit the Morse Wildlife Preserve\, nearly 100 acres spanning multiple habitats open to the public every second Sunday of the month from April through October. \nCome enjoy the Oregon white oak savanna\, prairie flowers\, and a mixed lowland forest full of cedar and hemlock. Morse Wildlife Preserve is also a birding hotspot\, with a resident barn owl\, western bluebirds\, and a myriad of other species. \nYou can check them all out at the Morse Hotspot on eBird. \nThe preserve started with a donation of approximately 50 acres from Lloyd and Maxine Morse. A private party purchased another 40-plus acres and then donated that land to the Tahoma Land Conservancy (now Forterra). Forterra owns the property\, while the Tahoma Bird Alliance provides educational programming and support. The Morse Force\, a group of dedicated local volunteers\, provides essential management and maintenance support. \nMore details are at Morse Visitor Information.

Such contributions help support future offerings and the growth of Dhamma. \n  \nBiographies \nAjahn Kovilo \n \nAjahn Kovilo is an Ohio-born monk who\, having been introduced to meditation through the Goenka tradition\, first entered the monastery in 2006. After receiving full ordination from Ajahn Pasanno and Ajahn Amaro at Abhayagiri Monastery in California in 2010\, he spent the next decade training at monasteries in the Ajahn Chah tradition in America and Thailand. In 2020\, after a year practicing at a Pa Auk Sayadaw monastery\, Ajahn Kovilo enrolled at the Dharma Realm Buddhist University (DRBU) to study Pali and to better understand Mahāyāna practices. Having graduated from DRBU in 2024\, Ajahn Kovilo has now joined the Clear Mountain community in person. \n  \nAjahn Nisabho \n \nAfter finishing college in 2012\, Ajahn Nisabho left his native Washington to go forth as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He received full ordination the following spring under Ajahn Anan\, a senior disciple of renowned meditation master\, Ajahn Chah\, and spent the following years training in forest monasteries throughout Thailand\, Australia\, and the US. While staying with some of the lineage’s most respected teachers\, he grew to believe the Thai Forest Tradition’s balance of communal life with solitary forest dwelling\, careful adherence to the monastic precepts\, and focus on meditation represented a faithful embodiment of the original Buddhist path. Moreover\, his time with contemporary masters such as Ajahn Anan\, Ajahn Pasanno\, and Ajahn Jayasaro\, convinced him that such a path could yield great fruit in the heart even amidst the complexities of modern life. He currently resides in Seattle as part of Clear Mountain Monastery’s aspiration. \n

Morse Wildlife Preserve is also a birding hotspot\, with a resident barn owl\, western bluebirds\, and a myriad of other species. \nYou can check them all out at the Morse Hotspot on eBird. \nThe preserve started with a donation of approximately 50 acres from Lloyd and Maxine Morse. A private party purchased another 40-plus acres and then donated that land to the Tahoma Land Conservancy (now Forterra). Forterra owns the property\, while the Tahoma Bird Alliance provides educational programming and support.
