SUMMARY:Partner Event: Visit Morse Wildlife Preserve for Second Sundays April-October
DESCRIPTION:Come visit the Morse Wildlife Preserve\, nearly 100 acres spanning multiple habitats open to the public every second Sunday of the month from April through October. \nCome enjoy the Oregon white oak savanna\, prairie flowers\, and a mixed lowland forest full of cedar and hemlock. Morse Wildlife Preserve is also a birding hotspot\, with a resident barn owl\, western bluebirds\, and a myriad of other species. \nYou can check them all out at the Morse Hotspot on eBird. \nThe preserve started with a donation of approximately 50 acres from Lloyd and Maxine Morse. A private party purchased another 40-plus acres and then donated that land to the Tahoma Land Conservancy (now Forterra). Forterra owns the property\, while the Tahoma Bird Alliance provides educational programming and support. The Morse Force\, a group of dedicated local volunteers\, provides essential management and maintenance support. \nMore details are at Morse Visitor Information.

SUMMARY:Fall Forays: Meditation with Clear Mountain Monastery
DESCRIPTION:Sitting and Walking Meditation with the monks of Clear Mountain Monastery; Ajahn Kovilo & Ajahn Nisabho at Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve. \nSeptember 21\, 1:30pm – 3:30pm\, Free event. \nJoin Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho for an afternoon of forest meditation and teachings. Designed for everyone to experience\, this event will start with a brief introduction to the property followed by a sitting meditation\, a talk and ending with a walking meditation.   \nThe Buddha was born under a tree\, attained Enlightenment under a tree\, lived and practiced under trees\, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”   \nOne of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area\, Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve is a wonderland of ponds\, marshes and forests stewarded and protected by Forterra. \nLet’s see what we can learn from sitting together there!   \nMore about Clear Mountain Monastery: Clear Mountain Monastery | An Aspiring Buddhist Forest Monastery in the Greater Seattle Area \nOne of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area\, Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve is a wonderland of ponds\, marshes and forests stewarded and protected by Forterra Trust. Let’s see what we can learn from sitting together there! \nWhat to Bring \n– A meditation cushion if you have one \n– Your intention to practice in community! \nDonations \nAll teachings are offered completely free of charge. However\, those who feel inspired to help support Forterra may donate here. Additionally\, those who wish to contribute towards Clear Mountain may do so by visiting the Friends of Clear Mountain website. Such contributions help support future offerings and the growth of Dhamma. \n  \nBiographies \nAjahn Kovilo \n \nAjahn Kovilo is an Ohio-born monk who\, having been introduced to meditation through the Goenka tradition\, first entered the monastery in 2006. After receiving full ordination from Ajahn Pasanno and Ajahn Amaro at Abhayagiri Monastery in California in 2010\, he spent the next decade training at monasteries in the Ajahn Chah tradition in America and Thailand. In 2020\, after a year practicing at a Pa Auk Sayadaw monastery\, Ajahn Kovilo enrolled at the Dharma Realm Buddhist University (DRBU) to study Pali and to better understand Mahāyāna practices. Having graduated from DRBU in 2024\, Ajahn Kovilo has now joined the Clear Mountain community in person. \n  \nAjahn Nisabho \n \nAfter finishing college in 2012\, Ajahn Nisabho left his native Washington to go forth as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He received full ordination the following spring under Ajahn Anan\, a senior disciple of renowned meditation master\, Ajahn Chah\, and spent the following years training in forest monasteries throughout Thailand\, Australia\, and the US. While staying with some of the lineage’s most respected teachers\, he grew to believe the Thai Forest Tradition’s balance of communal life with solitary forest dwelling\, careful adherence to the monastic precepts\, and focus on meditation represented a faithful embodiment of the original Buddhist path. Moreover\, his time with contemporary masters such as Ajahn Anan\, Ajahn Pasanno\, and Ajahn Jayasaro\, convinced him that such a path could yield great fruit in the heart even amidst the complexities of modern life. He currently resides in Seattle as part of Clear Mountain Monastery’s aspiration. \n

SUMMARY:Summer Saturdays: Arrowhead Point (Saint Edward State Park)
DESCRIPTION:  \nArrowhead Point is a 6.5 acre expansion of Saint Edward Park and is one of our region’s greatest nature walks. \nWe’ll hike (roughly 3 miles\, round-trip) to the park’s latest addition and savor its old forest\, quiet streams and natural shoreline. We’ll talk about the surprising variety of animals – including bobcat\, flying squirrel and river otter – that use the site. We’ll meet an uncommon (though native) tree species that provides food and homes for many wild animals. And we’ll learn how much patience\, persistence and collaboration are needed to protect nature in a popular suburban area. \nSummer Saturdays walks are led by Gary Mozel\, a naturalist and professional interpreter.\nAll three Summer Saturdays events will be led by Gary Mozel\, naturalist and professional interpreter. Gary has been a naturalist for over 50 years and has worked for the Washington State Parks\, the National Park Service\, various Audubon Societies\, Smithsonian Associates and Woodland Park Zoo. He has led nature walks\, and tours in such far-flung places as the Olympic Mountains\, coastal Alaska\, eastern Oregon\, tropical Australia and southern Kenya. \nMore than just a walk in the woods\, Gary will unveil nature’s hidden inhabitants by showing us what to hear and look for. Which of the hundreds of birds are year-round residents and who is just passing through. Come learn what is special about each of the landscapes that are under Forterra’s care and the story of how they became protected for everyone to enjoy.
Bring your camera\, binoculars\, friends and families! \nNote: For the purposes of nature watching please leave your pets at home – thank you! \n \n

SUMMARY:Summer Saturdays: Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:  \nOne of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area\, Hazel Wolf is a wonderland of ponds\, marshes and forests. Because it protects both woodlands and wetlands\, it boasts a huge variety of plants (more than 150 species)\, plus fascinating animals ranging from red-winged blackbirds to rough-skinned newts. \nWe’ll walk the roughly 2 miles of flat trails\, stopping often to observe nature and share “hidden stories” of the preserve’s residents. Which birds migrate here all the way from Central America every year? Which birds nest high up in tree cavities but find their food by diving into the pond? Have you ever seen a beaver dam THAT big?!? And who the heck WAS Hazel Wolf\, anyway? Join us and find out. \nSummer Saturdays walks are led by Gary Mozel\, a naturalist and professional interpreter.\nAll three Summer Saturdays events will be led by Gary Mozel\, naturalist and professional interpreter.
