SUMMARY:Forest Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nWith Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho\, from Clear Mountain Monastery. \nThis will be our 3rd year collaborating with Clear Mountain and it is met with huge excitement over the newly acquired home site for Clear Mountain Monastery\, which is located in North Bend. To all of you who had to reschedule the time and place from July at Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve to this new time on September 6th\, 12:30 – 2:00\, thank you for making the change. \nForterra NW had been working closely with Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho to find a new home that will provide a landscape of forest and trails ideally suited for gathering and meditation practice.  This new 90-acre North Bend location is a perfect fit and we will be celebrating our first Forterra Nature Discovery there in September. This landscape holds a variety of habitats including wetlands and dense forest that is home to fish bearing streams\, elk and all sorts of other wildlife. Join us for this meditative\,  deep nature experience and celebration of a new home. \nWhy Forest Meditation? The Buddha was born under a tree\, attained Enlightenment under a tree\, lived and practiced under trees\, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”  Let’s see what we can learn from sitting together.

Volunteers will focus on removing introduced blackberry and ivy which compete with native plants for resources and cause environmental harm. \nThis is a great opportunity to connect with nature\, create community\, and make a positive impact on our local environment. We look forward to seeing you there! \nWhat we are doing: We will focus on removing ivy\, blackberry\, and other weeds. \nWhat to bring: Please wear long sleeves\, long pants and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty or snagged on prickly plants. Bring a full water bottle and a snack. Hand tools and gloves will be provided\, but you can bring your own if you wish. Remember to bring rain gear if rain is in the forecast. \nWhere to park: Park in the lot north of the old swimming pool at McCollum Park (600 128th St SE Everett\, WA 98208). \nWhere to meet: We will meet at the northwest end of the park\, in the parking lot north of the swimming pool. SUMMARY:Forest Thinning
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nThe Swamp Lake area is just east of Snoqualmie Pass. It was home to unnaturally dense forests with low biodiversity and low resistance to fire\, but today it is a place where wise tree thinning and replanting are restoring wildlife populations and boosting fire resilience. With a more natural landscape\, animals such as elk\, bear and deer are returning. Join naturalist Gary Mozel for a moderate hike and see for yourself what ecological forest management looks like. You’ll meet a great diversity of plants\, see what we’ve learned about returning animals\, and discover how this site helps larger efforts to restore forests east of the Cascade Crest. \nAbout Swamp Lake.  \nSwamp Lake is a marshy area surrounded by forest at about 2\,400 feet elevation. It lies in an area where eastside and westside forests mingle freely\, where cedars and pines are neighbors. Forterra\, working with various partners\, acquired the site in 2006 and then embarked on a restoration effort that is seeing good results while still being a work in progress. This is your chance to see an example of how Forterra works with partners to find and enhance landscapes that can thrive and endure under our stewardship. \n  \n
