Grant access

Much of the shoreline we hope to restore is on private property. Granting permission for Challenge partners to work on your property is a simple, but crucial step for our success. Contact us to discuss this further.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the goals of the project?

The overall project focuses on commercial properties adjacent to the Green River Trail from I-5 north to S. 112th Street. In total we aim to restore 150,000 square feet along nearly 1.5 miles of shoreline.

Who is involved?

BECU is leading the effort with help from The City of Tukwila, Forterra, WRIA 9 and other non-profit groups. Businesses that have contributed to the effort include CBRE, RREEF, American Medical Response (AMR), Atkins Global, Darigold, PepsiCo, REI, RPI, Otis Elevator, YMCA Earth Service Corps.

How is the program being publicized?

The Restore the Duwamish Shoreline Challenge has built relationships with local media and has been featured in print, broadcast and online media including KING 5, KPLU, The Seattle Times, The Tukwila Reporter, KOMO’s Tukwila Community Blog and more. Sponsors are also featured on signage near restored areas of shoreline.

How can we participate?

Businesses and individuals can provide financial contributions, volunteer labor, or both! Costs to restore the banks of the Upper Duwamish vary, depending on accessibility and steepness of the slope. Where the shoreline is accessible for volunteers to work, regular work parties are held to restore and maintain the shoreline.

Where does our money go?

Financial contributions to the Challenge go to Forterra and become part of a fund to purchase plants, tools and to hire crews for clearing steep or hard-to-reach areas of the riverbank. All contributions will be dedicated directly to restoration work and reaching the goals of the Challenge.
