SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Spring Discoveries
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nDiscover the abundance of plant and wildlife at Morse Wildlife Preserve waking up from its wintry slumber as we explore prairie\, wetland and upland forest trails. Licia Sahagun and Ryan Johnson of Firecraft NW are naturalists and educators that unveil many of the hidden inhabitants found in this beautiful landscape. We’ll listen and attempt to identify the many birds that have recently migrated from California and Mexico. Along the way we’ll look for animal tracks and tune-in to the wild drama that plays out here every day. It’s time to get excited about the new season of Forterra Nature Discovery. Join us. \nAbout Morse Wildlife Preserve \nMorse is over 90 acres of forest\, prairie and wetland landscape that provides habitat for all sorts of plants and animals\, including: black tailed deer\, Roosevelt elk\, bobcat\, thatcher ants and countless migratory birds in the spring. This land-story begins with the owners and private partners recognizing the value of conservation and ultimately working with Forterra to hold and steward the property. Over time\, Forterra developed partnerships with the Bird Alliance and the Morse Force. These community and regional organizations provide the weekly stewardship\, restoration and study particular to this landscape. A gem of a landscape\, Morse Wildlife Preserve is a perfect example of donors\, community and vision of nature and people thriving together.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Wild Women Walk - Frost Moon
DESCRIPTION:Notice! We have had a change in venue.  \nDue to fallen trees and possible damage to the boardwalk\, we will not be meeting at Maxine G. Morse Nature Conservancy. Instead\, we will be meeting at Morse Wildlife\, a 90 acre preserve of prairie\, wetland and upland forest. It is about five miles from Maxine G. Morse. \nEvent Overview: \nThis women-only event celebrates the season with a walk through a wintery landscape. Bundle up and get out there to discover that the forest and all its inhabitants are still there. The frost moon or long night moon\, is remarkable and historically marks a time of reflection and renewal. If we find an appropriate location\, we may gather around a fire. Bring warm drinks and some stories to share. \nAbout Licia Sahagun \nShe is a founding member of Firecraft NW and has decades of environmental and sustainable development education and a master’s in environmental and natural resources. We got to see her experience and love for the outdoors recently at Morse Wildlife Preserve as we examined footprints\, listened for birds and speculated on a pile of fresh woodchips and missing tree left by a beaver.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nNature Journaling is for everyone.  Led by Nora Prindle\, this event offers a creative way to capture the essence of any experience in a way that is uniquely yours. Not only are we using words to capture the heart of things\, we are also using drawing – a kind of imagery shorthand that amplifies what we are witnessing. It’s a new way of experiencing nature with words\, sketches and doodles. No previous art skills are required. Nora will offer tips on drawing\, media and basic supplies. \nAbout Nora Prindle: \nNora is an artist and naturalist with a passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world. She has certificates in Natural Science Illustration from the University of Washington and Nature Journal Education from the Wild Wonder Foundation. As a co-caretaker of Morse Wildlife Preserve\, she finds inspiration in the native wildlife and believes that drawing nature and sharing it with others can foster a deeper appreciation and commitment to protecting the natural world.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Spring Birding – Stirring the Senses
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nApril at Morse Wildlife Preserve will be buzzing with migratory birds returning to feast on the  wetland insects and nest among the 300-year-old Garry oaks. Eileen Lambert is an educator\, naturalist and skilled birder. She will engage all our senses to better understand bird behavior and habitats.  \nSight: Learn how to identify birds by their plumage\, silhouettes\, and flight patterns.\nSound: Sharpen your ear for bird calls and songs\, decoding the melodies of birds.\nTouch: Get hands-on with natural materials like feathers\, nests\, and tree bark to better understand bird habitats and behaviors.\nSmell: Explore how scent can reveal the presence of certain species or indicate changes in habitat. Learn to connect plant scents with bird habitats. \nAbout Naturalist Eileen Lambert \nShe founded and runs Des Moines Birders\, where she has co-hosted Birding by Ear and Spring and Fall Migration outings. She has led multiple bird outings in the South Sound area and beyond. Her event will be the peak season for returning migratory birds and camas bloom at Morse Wildlife Preserve.

SUMMARY:Forterra Nature Discovery: Springtime Awakening
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEvent Overview: \nSee Morse Wildlife Preserve waking up from its wintry slumber as we explore prairie\, wetland and upland forest trails. Licia Sahagun and Ryan Johnson of Firecraft NW are naturalists and educators who will unveil hidden inhabitants of this beautiful landscape. We’ll listen and attempt to identify the many birds that have recently migrated from California to Mexico. Along the way we’ll look for animal tracks and tune-in to the wild dramas that play out here every day. It’s time to get excited about the new season of Forterra Nature Discovery™. \nJoin us! \nAbout Ryan Johnson: He is the founder of Firecraft Northwest. Ryan’s education is in biology and psychology\, and he has extensive experience as an outdoor educator. With a focus on naturalist skills\, his passions include birding\, ethnobotany\, shelter building\, wildlife tracking\, and teaching. Ryan’s goal is to help his students notice more about the natural world around them\, and hopes to surprise you by pointing out some of the incredible signs left by wildlife. \nAbout Licia Sahagun: She is a co-owner of Firecraft Northwest and has a decade of experience in environment and sustainability work and holds a master’s in Environmental\, Natural Resources\, and Energy Law. We got to see her experience and love for the outdoors recently at Morse Wildlife Preserve as we examined footprints\, listened for birds and speculated on a pile of fresh woodchips and missing tree left by a beaver.

SUMMARY:Summer Saturdays: Morse Wildlife Preserve
DESCRIPTION:  \nHow much natural beauty and diversity can you stand? Morse Preserve is a magical place where several habitats – fir forest\, oak savanna\, camas prairie\, marshy streams\, forested wetlands and more – crowd together to form one of the most beautiful and biologically diverse places in western Washington. \n\n\n\nBe among the select people who will be able to visit this preserve in 2024. It’s only open to visitors a handful of days each year! \nWe’ll ramble Morse’s mostly-level trails and boardwalks\, walking perhaps 2 or 3 miles. We’ll enjoy blooming flowers\, look and listen for some of the 100+ birds that call the refuge home\, and learn about the tiny (less than one-third of an inch long!) animal that helps spread the seeds of flowers such as bleeding heart and trillium. We’ll also talk with gratitude about the people who have worked hard to save and maintain the preserve. \n\n\nSummer Saturdays walks are led by Gary Mozel\, a naturalist and professional interpreter.\nAll three Summer Saturdays events will be led by Gary Mozel\, naturalist and professional interpreter. Gary has been a naturalist for over 50 years and has worked for the Washington State Parks\, the National Park Service\, various Audubon Societies\, Smithsonian Associates and Woodland Park Zoo. He has led nature walks\, and tours in such far-flung places as the Olympic Mountains\, coastal Alaska\, eastern Oregon\, tropical Australia and southern Kenya. \nMore than just a walk in the woods\, Gary will unveil nature’s hidden inhabitants by showing us what to hear and look for. Which of the hundreds of birds are year-round residents and who is just passing through. Come learn what is special about each of the landscapes that are under Forterra’s care and the story of how they became protected for everyone to enjoy. Bring your camera\, binoculars\, friends and families! \nNote: For the purposes of nature watching please leave your pets at home – thank you! \n \n

SUMMARY:Partner Event: Visit Morse Wildlife Preserve for Second Sundays April-October
DESCRIPTION:Come visit the Morse Wildlife Preserve\, nearly 100 acres spanning multiple habitats open to the public every second Sunday of the month from April through October. \nCome enjoy the Oregon white oak savanna\, prairie flowers\, and a mixed lowland forest full of cedar and hemlock. Morse Wildlife Preserve is also a birding hotspot\, with a resident barn owl\, western bluebirds\, and a myriad of other species. \nYou can check them all out at the Morse Hotspot on eBird. \nThe preserve started with a donation of approximately 50 acres from Lloyd and Maxine Morse. A private party purchased another 40-plus acres and then donated that land to the Tahoma Land Conservancy (now Forterra). Forterra owns the property\, while the Tahoma Bird Alliance provides educational programming and support. The Morse Force\, a group of dedicated local volunteers\, provides essential management and maintenance support. \nMore details are at Morse Visitor Information.
