SUMMARY:Forest Thinning
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nThe Swamp Lake area is just east of Snoqualmie Pass. It was home to unnaturally dense forests with low biodiversity and low resistance to fire\, but today it is a place where wise tree thinning and replanting are restoring wildlife populations and boosting fire resilience. With a more natural landscape\, animals such as elk\, bear and deer are returning. Join naturalist Gary Mozel for a moderate hike and see for yourself what ecological forest management looks like. You’ll meet a great diversity of plants\, see what we’ve learned about returning animals\, and discover how this site helps larger efforts to restore forests east of the Cascade Crest. \nAbout Swamp Lake: \nSwamp Lake is a marshy area surrounded by forest at about 2\,400 feet elevation. It lies in an area where eastside and westside forests mingle freely\, where cedars and pines are neighbors. Forterra\, working with various partners\, acquired the site in 2006 and then embarked on a restoration effort that is seeing good results while still being a work in progress. This is your chance to see an example of how Forterra works with partners to find and enhance landscapes that can thrive and endure under our stewardship. \n\nDirections:  \nHeading east on I-90 take exit 62.\nMake a left at the stop sign.\nOnce you cross over the highway\, there is a large parking lot on the right. That is where we will meet. \n\n\n  \n
