With prairies\, forests and wetlands\, Morse is a veritable Best Hits of western Washington nature. This land-story begins with the owners and private partners recognizing the value of conservation and ultimately working with Forterra to hold and steward the property. Over time\, Forterra developed partnerships with the Bird Alliance and the Morse Force. These community and regional organizations provide ongoing stewardship\, restoration and educational opportunities. A gem of a landscape\, Morse Wildlife Preserve captures Forterra’s vision of nature and people thriving together. \n

SUMMARY:Name Those Plants\, Flowers & Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nAmble through the 117 acres (trail is 1 mile) of wetland and upland forest where flowers and fungi are blooming everywhere. Plants will be bursting with spring growth and we’ll look for clues on how to identify them. Ryan Johnson (Firecraft NW) is a naturalist whose specialty is plant ID and wildlife tracking. We’ll explore the differences between wetland plants and upland forest species and learn which animals find the new growth tasty to nibble on. Bonus: Ryan also knows his birds\, which we will keep an eye and ear out for. Bring the whole family. \nAbout Forterra and Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve:\nHidden in this beautiful\, marshy landscape is a story of how Forterra\, protects forests and ecologically critical lands across Washington. For this preserve\, we partnered with King County and neighboring businesses in creative ways to demonstrate how conservation and economic growth can lead to sustainable outcomes. \n

SUMMARY:Forest Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nWith Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho\, from Clear Mountain Monastery. \nThis is our 3rd year of collaborating with Clear Mountain and offering this event. From the beginning\, we have seen how slowing down and taking in nature’s sounds\, smells and visual richness is a heartfelt and grounding experience. \nDesigned for everyone\, this event will start with a slow and quiet half-mile walk leading us to an open area where the Ajahn’s will guide us in sitting meditation and a talk. We’ll complete the second half with more walking\, taking in nature the whole way. \nWhy Forest Meditation? The Buddha was born under a tree\, attained Enlightenment under a tree\, lived and practiced under trees\, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”  Let’s see what we can learn from sitting together. \nAbout Hazel Wolf (1898 – 2000) activist and environmentalist\, is an inspiration for conservation work and the namesake of the property. Her rabble-rousing determination is shared by many of Forterra’s supporters\, monthly donors and volunteers that keep this critical work alive and growing. \n

SUMMARY:Birding for All
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nAugust at Morse Wildlife Preserve is rich in bird life. The wetland insects and nest sites among the 300-year-old Garry oaks make for great sighting opportunities. Eileen Lambert is an educator\, naturalist and skilled birder. She will engage all our senses to better understand bird behavior and habitats. \n\nSight: Learn how to identify birds by their plumage\, silhouettes\, and flight patterns.\nSound: Sharpen your ear for bird calls and songs\, decoding the melodies of birds.\nTouch: Get hands-on with natural materials like feathers\, nests\, and tree bark to better understand bird habitats and behaviors.\nSmell: Explore how scent can reveal the presence of certain species or indicate changes in habitat. Learn to connect plant scents with bird habitats.\n\nEnjoy the day at Morse Wildlife Preserve as you learn about the wildlife and possibly spot our resident great horned owl. \nAbout Morse Wildlife Preserve\nMorse is over 90 acres of forest\, prairie and wetland landscape that provides habitat for all sorts of plants and animals\, including: black tailed deer\, Roosevelt elk\, bobcat\, thatcher ants and countless migratory birds in the spring. SUMMARY:Forest Thinning
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview: \nThe Swamp Lake area is just east of Snoqualmie Pass. It was home to unnaturally dense forests with low biodiversity and low resistance to fire\, but today it is a place where wise tree thinning and replanting are restoring wildlife populations and boosting fire resilience. With a more natural landscape\, animals such as elk\, bear and deer are returning. Join naturalist Gary Mozel for a moderate hike and see for yourself what ecological forest management looks like. You’ll meet a great diversity of plants\, see what we’ve learned about returning animals\, and discover how this site helps larger efforts to restore forests east of the Cascade Crest. \nAbout Swamp Lake.  \nSwamp Lake is a marshy area surrounded by forest at about 2\,400 feet elevation. It lies in an area where eastside and westside forests mingle freely\, where cedars and pines are neighbors. Forterra\, working with various partners\, acquired the site in 2006 and then embarked on a restoration effort that is seeing good results while still being a work in progress. This is your chance to see an example of how Forterra works with partners to find and enhance landscapes that can thrive and endure under our stewardship. \n  \n

They support wildlife\, improve air and water quality\, and help create more resilient ecosystems in our urban environments.  \nWe’ll kick things off with a walk through the preserve and have restoration professionals on hand to share their knowledge and answer your questions about native plants\, the Green Tukwila Partnership\, and Forterra’s long-term stewardship of this special place.  \nWhat we are doing: We’ll be clearing blackberries to protect the native trees and groundcovers that have already been planted by volunteers like you. The Preserve now features a Cultural Garden\, an outdoor classroom\, an enhanced trail system\, and ongoing restoration areas—your efforts will help ensure this space thrives for generations to come. \nWhat to bring: Dress for the weather—layers are your friend! Please bring a reusable water bottle. Forterra will provide snacks\, drinks\, tools\, and gloves. Together\, we’ll have fun!  \nWhere to park: Park in the lot at Duwamish Hill Preserve. View in Google Maps\n \nWhere to meet: Signs will guide you from the parking area to our meeting spot. \nDate and Time: Friday\, October 16\, 2026\, 1:00 –3:30 PM  \nRegister and learn more here.
