Our mission has never changed, only our means to get there.

Land Acknowledgement

We gather and live on the plains, plateaus, mountains, and coastal lands that have been home to Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. We respect their Indigenous and tribal treaty rights, and honor their culture today.

Our story began in 1989 when a group of volunteers formed the Seattle King County Land Trust – introducing a new approach to land conservation, one that bridged the gap between public and private entities.
We quickly realized conserving wild lands was not enough – our region was losing working lands. Challenging the status quo to cut across traditional boundaries and ideologies, our work expanded to include working farms and forests, critical to the region’s health.

We recognize that how we do our work is as important as what we seek to achieve.

and we didn’t stop there Collaborating with more than 3,500 people across the region, Forterra delivered a pair of ambitious plans—The Cascade and Olympic Agendas – drawing attention to the key relationship between people and nature. Work that continues today.

The health of all our landscapes required us to address human problems. Forterra works collaboratively alongside communities toward equitable solutions that prioritizes self-determination.
