Forterra is proud to support the Society for Ecological Restoration at UW with a Community Restoration Grant to restore a highly accessible 0.5-acre space on the main Seattle campus of the University of Washington, adjacent to the Burke Gillman trail.
What makes this Native Food Forest Restoration & Education Project special is that it’s led by students. They aim to provide hands-on restoration education to our club officers and student volunteers via frequent work parties around campus, and for outside groups such as scouts. Funds will also be used for event materials, including tools, plants, and long-term monitoring infrastructure. Additional supplies, such as ecology-focused games and art supplies, will help foster a connection with nature, an appreciation of ecology, and a sense of place in the Puget Sound region.
Students will also design and install signage for plants that include their names and Indigenous uses, deepening visitors’ understanding and appreciation of plants native to our region while respectfully acknowledging long-standing ecological relationships.
